Choosing a private-AI workstation for a law firm

Fee earners summarise, search, draft and transcribe on a machine the firm owns, on its own network, with no client data leaving the building. This guide follows a real enquiry for three standard machines, a real first quote and the decisions that turn a specification into the right purchase.

The quoted systems

Real configurations at November 2026 prices, ex VAT. They are generous on purpose; the guide shows when you need them and when a smaller build does the job.

Four things to remember

  • Size from concurrent requests, not headcount. Ten fee earners rarely put more than two or three requests in at once.
  • GPU memory is model plus working space. Every request in flight needs room for its context, and legal documents are long.
  • Mirrored drives are not a backup. Keep encrypted offline copies and test a restore.
  • Offline must be proven. We test every machine with the network unplugged and log any outbound traffic for 24 hours before it ships.
